光度法测铁Fe(II) 和总铁。
Fe2+复合物的颜色在pH 3.4-5.8（1:2，logK=20.4）时呈红紫色，TPTZ可被用作Fe的金属指示剂。但是TPTZ与Co、Cu、Ni这些金属离子也会显色，因此不能用作Fe的选择性比色试剂，如果存在大量的Co、Cu、Ni离子，会妨碍检测。除了血清和锅炉水里面的Fe离子以外，也有报道可以定量玻璃、煤炭、高纯度的各种金属、酒、维生素E等样品中的Fe。
